Obituary for John Ella Bell Criswell

Ms. Ella Bell Criswell or Ella Criswell, as she was commonly known, was born in Plumerville, Arkansas to parents Sara Johnson Jefferson and Thomas Jefferson. She was the youngest of seventeen siblings, all of whom proceeded her in death.


Ella transitioned from this life on June 20, 2024 at CHI St. Vincent Hospital, after a brief stay.


Ella attended primary school in Plumerville and attended high school at Menifee High School through 11th grade. She married Albert Criswell in 1950, with whom all her children were born. In mid 1979, Ella moved to Washington, DC for a brief period. The summer of 1980, she returned to live in Plumerville, Arkansas where she remained until her transition from this life at the age of ninety (90) years in 2024.


Ella worked many different jobs and occupations, including child rearing in her household and jobs outside her household. In her most recent later years Ella worked for approximately 17 years as a Site Aide in the Kitchen for Morrilton Human Relations Council (MHRC) T.C. Vaughn Senior Adult Center, until her retirement. Ella assisted in preparing what has been described as delicious meals. She also served and delivered meals to homes of seniors in Conway County. Ella received awards recognizing her good work with the senior community.


Ella enjoyed traveling and sightseeing. She traveled to numerous places inside the State of Arkansas and outside, including Tulsa, Oklahoma; Kansas City, Missouri; Kansas; Memphis, Tennessee; Killeen, Texas; Washington, DC; West Virginia and Maryland. Ella also enjoyed shopping trip outings with her children.


Ella leaves to cherish her memory ten children Albert Perry Criswell, Earl Criswell, Selina Criswell-Boyd, Gloria Criswell-Nzioka, Grover Criswell, Wanda Criswell, Phyllis Metcalf, Nelson Criswell, Hester Criswell and Earnest Criswell; Twelve (12) Grandchildren, DeShona Criswell, Earl M. Criswell (Stephanie), Krystle Williams (Daniel), Kimberly Boyd, Esther Nzioka, Victor Nzioka (Danielle), Grover Criswell, Jr., Reginal Kearney, T. Ashley Metcalf (Eric Eno), Dwayne Metcalf (Keilani), Phelisha McArthur (Ricky), Lisa Nguyen; a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews; special nieces Florence Salton and Emma Barnes, whom she reportedly helped to nurture as children; special cousin Shelby Johnson, other special relatives and friends she accumulated in over ninety (90) years of living life on her own terms as a sovereign soul exercising her God created free will as an embodied human being on this earth plain of existence.


Visitation will be held  11:00 am - 1:00 pm, Monday, July 1, 2024 at the funeral home.


Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 pm, Monday, July 1, 2024 at the funeral home.
