Obituary for Emily Jean Middleton
Emily Jean Fleming Middleton, aged 86, passed away on June 12, 2024. She was a beloved mother, sister, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Emily was born September 11, 1937 to DeWitt Fleming and Berthena Harrs Fleming in Conway, Arkansas where she spent much of her formative years. She attended Pine Street Elementary and High School, Conway, Arkansas. She obtained her collegiate degree with a major in Music and a minor in English from Philander Smith University, Little Rock, Arkansas. While at Philander, she was a member of Philander Smith’s traveling choir that performed in many cities across the nation.
Joe Middelton and Emily united in marriage in 1964.
Emily went on to teach in Russellville, Arkansas and Chicago, Illinois. She taught Music and English at Riverside Junior High in Grand Rapids, Michigan where she eventually retired. Emily was a mentor and was always available to provide guidance, support, and encouragement, no matter what challenges her students faced. Throughout her career, she was known for her hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others.
Emily was a member of First Community AME Church of Grand Rapids, Michigan and enjoyed singing in the Church Choir. She was an excellent cook and loved to travel. She was a football fanatic and her favorite team was the Minnesota Vikings. More than anything, Emily was a devoted mother to her daughter Jackie.
Emily is survived by her loving daughter Jacquline Michelle Middleton; her Uncle Audrey Fleming, a sister, Lela Fleming Alexander, and brother Deacon Deodis Fleming. She was preceded in death by her brother Reverend Delaney Fleming. Emily is also survived by a host of nephews, nieces and cousins. Her memory will be cherished by all of those whose lives she touched in her family, at her church, and in her community.
Visitation will be held 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm, Friday, June 21, 2024 at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, June 22, 2024 at Greater Pleasant Branch Baptist Church, 601 Spruce Street, Conway, AR.
Interment to follow at Robinson Cemetery in Conway, AR.
