Obituary for Edell "Doc" Gray, Sr.
Mr. Edell R. "Doc" Gary, Sr. of Harlin, KY departed this life Sunday, March 21, 2011 at his home surrounded by family following a lengthy battle with cancer. Born November 1, 1928 to the late Robert Gray and Lillie Bell Triplette.  A native of Mississippi, his family moved to Columbus, OH when Doc was a young child. He accepted Christ at an early age and upon moving to Harlan, KY, became a member of the First Baptist Church of Harland, where he served as Trustee. He is a Prince Hall Mason and a Brother of Omega Psi Phi.
He attended Central High School in Columbus and then attended Arkansas A.M.&N., where he graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree. In 1956, Doc accepted a two year teaching position with the former Rosenwald High School. Following integration, he accepted a teaching position with the Harlan Independent School District. In the 1970's, Doc went to coach at Evarts High School for one year and at the conclusion, returned to Harlan High School where he continued his coaching career.
Doc was inducted into the Kentucky High School Athletic Association's Hall of Fame in 2001 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Harlan County Chamber of Commerce in 2009.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Mable Worthy; and by two daughters, Anita L. Gray and Willie Ruth "Bunny" Gray.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 57 years, Dorothy Gray of Harland; one son, Edell R. Gray, Jr. (Angela) of Cincinnati, OH; one daughter, Robin Elaine Prather of Conway, AR; five grandchildren, Leeza Prather and Dorothy Prather, both of Harlan; Edell Gray III of Benton Harbor, MI; Louis Gray and Kennedy Gray, both of Cincinnati, OH; two sisters, Virgie Broadnax and Emma Taylor of Columbus, OH; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation for Doc Dray will begin at 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Harland Baptist Church, 102 West Mound STreet, Harlan. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the church with Pastor C.A. Hall officiating and Evangelist Jake Ravizee as the Eulogist. Burial 12 noon Monday, March 28, 2011 at Robinson Cemetery, Conway, AR.
