Obituary for Cathy L. Tate

Ms. Cathy Louise Tate, 73, of Conway, AR transitioned early on Thursday, May 9, 2024. She was born in Marvell, AR on February 15, 1951 to the late Louis and Ruby (Barnes) Tate. Cathy was the third of seven children.


Cathy professed her faith at an early age under the pastoral leadership of Wesley Chapel AME Church in Marvell, AR. She later joined Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, IL, where she remained an active and faithful member upon retirement and relocating to Conway, AR. In 2013, Cathy united with Rock of Ages Missionary Baptist Church in NLR, AR under the pastoral leadership of Dr. James E. Mackey.


A 1969 graduate of M.M. Tate High School in Marvell, AR, she went on to pursue a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Biology and Chemistry from Kansas State University. Upon completion of her studies, she moved to Chicago, IL and was employed by the University of Illinois as a lead researcher within the Bio/Chemistry department.


Cathy's talents were expressed through the arts. She was an accomplished musician mastering the piano, clarinet and other woodwind instruments. She could draw, sketch and paint in different mediums ranging from pencil to oils to paints. But, her favorite was sketching, designing and making clothing and jewelry. I the 1980s, while working and living in Chicago, she launched "Cathy's Creations", which showcased her original designs.


Cathy is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Wyonia Tate Boyd and Ophelia Tate Claiborne; and one brother, Robert Gray.


She leaves behind to cherish her precious memories two sisters Doris Tate and Regina (Ron) Davenport; one brother Louis (Jackie) Tate; eight nieces and nephews; eight great nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.


A memorial service will be held 3:00 pm, Sunday, May 19, 2024 at the J.R. Raynor Educational Complex on the campus of Greater Pleasant Branch Baptist Church, 601 Spruce Street, Conway, AR.
