Obituary for Alvin Mays
Mr. Alvin Mays, 45, of Conyers, Georgia departed this life, Sunday, January 26, 2014. He was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas on February 18, 1968 to Mr. Booker and Mrs. Wanda Mays, Sr. He is the grandson of the late Harrison and Thannie Mays, and Ivory and Alvin Holmes.

He graduated from Watson Chapel High School in 1986. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff; and a Master of Science in Education Leadership from University of Central Arkansas, and Education Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Alvin believed in life-long learning and continued his studies as a Systems Engineering student at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia. He was to receive an  Engineering Graduate Certificate in Systems Engineering in May 2014.  

Alvin exchanged vows with Hazel Lerchette Smith on August 8, 1992 at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. To this union, two children were born, Gabril and Bethany.

Most importantly, Alvin accepted Christ at an early age at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He later became a deacon at True Holiness Saints Center in Conway, Arkansas and Bread of Heaven Ministry in Morrilton, Arkansas. Although a meek and mild advocate for the Lord, one would find Alvin ministering and sharing God’s good news.

Alvin spent 16 years of dedicated service teaching in the Arkansas School Systems in Altheimer, Pulaski County and Little Rock. Upon his family relocating to Conyers, GA., he taught at Jackson High School and later accepted a position at Atlanta Metropolitan State College (AMSC) as a Research Analyst/Pre-Matriculation Math Instructor.  He loved educating students. In his spare time while working at AMSC, Alvin would volunteer math tutoring services in the campus library. He believed in encouraging and assisting students to become successful. With his expertise, he helped many students in the local communities become college-ready. 

Alvin and his family joined the Shiloh Baptist Church in McDonough, GA in 2007. He served on the Deacon Board, Greeters Ministry, and Outreach Ministry.

Alvin is survived by his wife of 21 years, Dr. Hazel Mays, and their children, Airman 1st Class Gabril Mays (USAF), Misawa, Japan, and daughter Bethany Mays (graduating senior). He is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Booker Mays, Sr. of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and Father and Mother-In-Law, Dr. Cortez and Mrs. Jolinda Smith of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; three brothers, Booker Mays, Jr. (Romonda) of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Eugene Mays of Oakland, Tennessee, and Ivory Mays of Pontiac, Michigan; Brother-In-Law Chris Smith (Treddie) of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; nephews, Booker T. Mays, III, Christopher Smith, Jr., Christian Smith, Jumante Smith,and a niece Romia Mays. Alvin’s unwavering servant spirit will truly be missed.  

 
Funeral services will be held 2 pm, Saturday, February 1, 2014 at First Missionary Baptist Church, 4500 Faucett Road, Pine Bluff, AR. Visitation will be 6-7 pm, Friday, January 31, 2014 at the church. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Larry G. Acklin Funeral Home, 8821 Colonel Glenn, Little Rock. "In Your Time Of Need.....We Care."
